Chandras or Handras
This village on the Ziros Plateau is set between the high hills of Eastern Crete. The village is over 500 metres above sea level and is known for its clean, healthy air & its plentiful supply of drinking water. There are schools that cover all ages up to high school level, plenty of shops and tavernas, mini markets, bakeries, good medical services and a variety of hardware shops. The road through the village leads to the beaches at Xerocambos.
The village of Handras is in the Municipality of Lefki. It lays back from the main road and consists of lovely old stone cottages, many of which have recently been renovated. The village was first recorded in a Venetian census in 1583 as Candra with a population of 399 Just outside the village is the ancient Minoan settlement of Voila which is visited by many tourists.
The Minoan community at Palekastro was often invaded by pirates and this caused some of the inhabitants to leave and settle in Voila because of its abundant supply of fresh water from the spring that can still be seen. There is also the cave of Panagia Gouda which is in the Handras region.
There are several cafenions around the village square and a Taverna.
Handras is 24 km from Sitia and 4 km from Ziros
