Aghios Spiridonas or Agios Spiridon
This lovely little village was once called Kanene and is situated on the old road to the Ziros Plateau, just off the main north/south coast road from Sitia to Ierapetra. The old road wanders across the river valley and passes The Mill of Figeto that is situated beside the river. The road then continues on up the hillside on the opposite side and passes through Agios Spiridon and on to the old Minoan ruins at Praissos.
The villagers are very proud of its well kept appearance which is maintained by the village committee who have preserved the character of the place but have used their imagination to make the best use of the facilities. When the village school was closed, they renovated the building and turned the playground into an open air arena, and this is now used for their village festivals and social events.
There are two cafenions in the village and nearby, across the valley, there are several other villages with facilities for eating out and shopping. This is a quiet and friendly community that welcomes its foreign visitors and has a knack of making them feel at home.
The surrounding valley and hills are good for walking and the river keeps the trees looking lovely and green all the year round. A truly lovely place to have a residential property or a holiday home if you are looking for peace and tranquility.
