Roussa Ekklisia
This lovely old village on the north coast is blessed with a very healthy climate and is about 8 km from Sitia. Reached by a road that forks off the Sitia to Palekastro road beyond the rise at Tripitos, the village is located over 300 meters above sea level and has wonderful views over the Bay of Sitia. The origin of the name is uncertain, though it is believed by some to come from the running water which flows from under the old village church of Ayios Nikolaos i.e. reousa meaning flowing plus ekklisia meaning church. In the village there is a fountain which, according to its inscription was built in 1877 by Axelos, the then Governor of the Province of Lassithi. In 1897 a conference of the Revolutionary Council was held in the village to compose a petition to the Russian Vice-Consul at Heraklion.
The village has a lovely taverna opposite to the church where the water source is located and it is very pleasant to sit out on the terrace under the trees whilst enjoying the view down to the sea. There are also cafenions and the village is well populated all year round. This village is a much sort after location.
