Aghios Stephanos or Agios Stefanos
This is one of several villages that is set above the coastal resort of Makrygialos ,on the South Coast and used to be called Gras. The village has undergone many changes over the last few years as the village has become very popular with Northern Europeans who have bought and renovated many of the old houses and now use then as holiday homes.
Many of the houses in the village enjoy superb views down the valley and out across the Libyan Sea. There are tavernas, kafenions and the resort of Makrygialos is only a ten minute drive down the hillside. There is vehicle access to both the lower and upper village. There are a good selection of old stone houses available within the village for renovation.
On a hill nearby there is a ruined Venetian castle which appears to have been built on the ruins of an old Acropolis. Aghios Stephanos was the birthplace of Anognostis Papadakis and his son Emmanuel Fountalidis who were leading politicians in the Sitia district during the revolution that started in 1897.
Aghios Stephanos is 35 km from Sitia, and 4 from Makrygialos.
