Armeni
The vibrant farming village of Armeni is set 500ft above sea level on the Ziros plateau in central eastern Crete. Apple, pear and cherry trees grow alongside oranges, lemons and prickly pear cactus – this is the bread basket of the area, as much the fresh fruit and vegetables as well as the grapes for wine and raki and the olives for oil are grown in this fertile spot between the high hills. The clean fresh air makes this a wonderful haven for people with respiratory problems. The climate is moderate, with less intense heat during the summer.
Armeni has a range of shops, including mini-markets, hardware shops, coffee houses and tavernas, some of which are located around the square and shaded by a large eucalyptus tree. The area is well provided with medical services, as well as schools for children of all ages. There is a local bus service to Sitia. The village is almost equidistant from the north, south and east coasts – you can be on the beach in less than 30 minutes. Available properties in this area are highly varied, suitable as both holiday homes and for full-time residence, as the village is well populated and active throughout the year.
The beach at Xerocambos is close by.
Armeni is 29 km from Sitia, and 16 km from Makrygialos.
